House Speaker Paul Ryan praised the FBI's decision to reopen its investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server and said she should be suspended from receiving classified briefings.

Just days before the Nov. 8 presidential election, congressional leaders said Friday the bureau told them it will take another look at the Clinton email case. Clinton, a Democrat, is locked in a tight race with Republican Donald Trump for president.

"Yet again, Hillary Clinton has nobody but herself to blame," Ryan said in a statement. "She was entrusted with some of our nation's most important secrets, and she betrayed that trust by carelessly mishandling highly classified information.

"This decision, long overdue, is the result of her reckless use of a private email server, and her refusal to be forthcoming with federal investigators.

"I renew my call for the Director of National Intelligence to suspend all classified briefings for Secretary Clinton until this matter is fully resolved."

Clinton was secretary of state under President Barack Obama from 2009-2013 and used a private email server and several email addresses during that time instead of the more secure government email system.

After a lengthy investigation, the FBI recommended in July that charges should not be brought against her. The Department of Justice followed the FBI's directive.
