The ambush police shootings that claimed five Dallas Police Department officers and wounded six others should be a "vivid wake up call" about the dangers police officers face, Rep. Pete King said Friday morning.

"Our men and women in blue put their lives on the line for us every day and are too often subject to criticism and second guessing from critics who would never have the guts to walk in their shoes," the New York Republican said in a statement to Newsmax.

"Not every cop is perfect but the overwhelming majority of police officers are truly heroic and do more than anyone else in society to save thousands of lives of innocent men and women of all races."

King's father served for 30 years in the New York Police Department, and the congressman said Friday that "I know that we can never thank police officers enough, but we must give them our support! RIP."

King also said that as officers fight for their lives following the brutal assassinations, "our thoughts and prayers must be with all these brave officers and their families and loved ones. This latest brutal attack should be a vivid wake up call and reminder of how dangerous a cop's job is."
