Hillary Clinton won the first presidential debate and leads Donald Trump by 7 points in Michigan, following a statewide poll conducted after Monday's debate, according to the latest WDIV/Detroit News poll.
The results:
- Clinton: 42 percent;
- Trump: 35 percent;
- Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson: 9 percent;
- Green Party nominee Jill Stein: 3 percent;
- Undecided: 9 percent.
After Monday's 90-minute debate at Hofstra University in New York, 62.5 percent of voters said Trump was unqualified to be president, while 57 percent were of the view that Clinton was more qualified.
While 52 percent of likely voters said Clinton won the debate, 20 percent said Trump got the better of her. Among Trump voters, 45 percent said he won, while 88 percent of Clinton's voters said she won the debate.
"The problem for Trump is the debate was the prime opportunity to shift that perception that he wasn't qualified," pollster Richard Czuba, president of the Glengariff Group Inc. told the Detroit News. "That should have been their No. 1 goal in the debate to come off as a qualified, calm leader."
An earlier survey of July 30 to Aug. 1, fetched similar results when asked if Trump was qualified to lead the country. A huge 61 percent answered no.
Trump's popularity among male voters gave him an advantage of 9 points over Clinton — 44 percent to 35 percent. Clinton, meanwhile, continued to hold a promising 21-point lead over Trump among female voters — 48 percent to 27 percent.
In the survey, 600 likely voters were interviewed on Tuesday and Wednesday by Glengariff Group Inc. The margin of error was plus-or-minus 4 percentage points.
