Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton remain the clear front-runners in the nation's presidential primaries, according to a new
Quinnipiac University National Poll, but Bernie Sanders and John Kasich fare better in hypothetical head-to-head general election matchups.
Results are:
- Republican: Trump at 43 percent, 29 percent for Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and 16 percent Kasich.
- Democratic: Clinton over Sanders, 50 - 38 percent.
General election matchups:
- Clinton tops Trump 46 - 40 percent;
- Clinton gets 45 percent to 42 percent for Cruz;
- Kasich tops Clinton 47 - 39 percent;
- Sanders beats Trump 52 - 38 percent;
- Sanders tops Cruz 50 - 39 percent;
- Kasich gets 45 percent to Sanders' 44 percent.
Even with Trump and Clinton ahead in the polls, they also top the "no way" list, Quinnipiac found, with 54 percent of American voters say they "would definitely not" vote for Trump, with 43 percent saying no to Clinton, 33 percent nixing Cruz, 27 percent saying no to Sanders and 14 percent saying no to Kasich.
And American voters have poor views of Trump as president:
- Scared," 117 American voters;
- "Disaster," 46 voters;
- "Frightened and terrified," 45 voters each;
- "Horrified," 42 voters;
But "good," the seventh word on the list, got 36 voters.
Clinton did not fare much better:
- "Disaster," 68 voters;
- "Good," 51 voters;
- "Scared," 49 voters;
- "Disappointed," 43 voters;
- Hopeful," 41 voters.
Trump, Clinton and Cruz all got negative favorability ratings:
- 33 - 61 percent for Trump;
- 39 - 56 percent for Clinton;
- 32 - 47 percent for Cruz. Kasich gets a positive 43 - 20 percent favorability score, with Sanders at 50 - 37 percent.
The poll was conducted between March 16-21 and surveyed 1,451 registered voters nationwide, including 652 Republicans and 635 Democrats. The margins of error were 2.5 percentage points overall, 3.8 percentage points among Republicans, and 3.9 percent among Democrats.
