Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump's protesters and supporters are all responsible for violent incidents at his campaign appearances, but a majority also say Trump must take a share of the blame himself, according to a new
Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
The poll results show:
- Trump "mostly responsible," 37 percent;
- Trump "somewhat responsible," 27 percent;
- Protesters to blame: 78 percent;
- Protesters "very responsible," 39 percent;
- Protesters "somewhat responsible," 39 percent;
- Trump supporters to blame: 70 percent;
- Trump supporters "very responsible," 30 percent;
- Trump supporters "somewhat responsible," 40 percent;
Some voters absolve Trump of blame, with 22 percent saying he is "not at all responsible" and 12 percent saying he's "not so responsible."
Breaking down the results by political party:
- 38 percent of Republicans believe Trump himself is "very" or "somewhat" to blame.
- 88 percent of Democrats believe Trump is to blame.
- 49 percent of Republicans say Trump's own supporters are "very" or "somewhat" accountable for violence, while 88 percent of Democrats blame them.
As for the protesters at the rallies, respondents from both parties take them to task for their actions: 90 percent of Republicans and 65 percent of Democrats.
Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,451 registered voters across the nation for this poll. Interviewers conducted the polls by phone live, with 652 of the respondents saying they voted Democrat and 635 saying they voted Republican.
According to a
CBS News/NYT poll, 43 percent believe Trump's supporters and his protesters are both at fault and 64 percent do not approve of how Trump has handled the violence at his rallies.
