Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has a 4-point lead over his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton among voters in South Carolina, according to a Winthrop University poll.

The breakdown of the poll, conducted Sept. 18-26, which ended before the first presidential debate:

  • Trump: 42 percent;
  • Clinton: 38 percent;
  • Undecided: 7 percent.

No third-party candidate registered double-digit support.

Trump also outscored Clinton when voters were asked if the candidate was honest.

  • Trump: 33 percent;
  • Clinton: 20 percent.

South Carolina voters rated Clinton more favorably when asked if they thought she was capable of performing as president.

  • Clinton: 53 percent;
  • Trump: 46 percent.

Around 55 percent of voters view both candidates unfavorably.

"While Clinton is seen as the more capable candidate, she is also viewed as more dishonest," said poll director Scott Huffmon.

"However, both candidates are setting records for being viewed unfavorably. While Trump has the lead, these factors may contribute to why he is underperforming expectations of a hypothetical generic Republican versus generic Democrat matchup," he added.

In the state, President Barack Obama's approval rating is at 48 percent, but his disapproval rating is at 50 percent. Obama has consistently been less popular in South Carolina than nationwide, according to the poll.

While Trump is ahead in South Carolina, a Public Policy Polling survey released Thursday showed Clinton ahead in North Carolina and four other battleground states.
