Nearly seven out of 10 voters want the loser of the presidential election to accept the outcome, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Friday.
The poll results:
- Accept results: 68 percent;
- Challenge results: 14 percent.
Among those:
- 24 percent of Donald Trump supporters want him to challenge results;
- 53 percent of tea party supporters say loser should accept results;
- 56 percent of conservatives say loser should accept results.
Despite that, 46 percent of voters believe it's likely that widespread voter fraud will take place on Nov. 8.
"With Nov. 8 drawing near and the 'rigged election' rhetoric reaching a fever pitch, it will be important to watch Donald Trump's supporters react when the final results roll in," Kyle Dropp, co-founder and chief research officer at Morning Consult told Politico.
Trump dropped a bombshell during the final debate Wednesday night when he refused to pledge to accept the election results, saying instead he would keep everybody in suspense.
Then Thursday at a rally in Ohio, Trump said he would accept the election results — if he wins.
Trump has been universally condemned for taking that stance while his campaign and closest supporters qualify his position from the outside in, saying for example Trump will accept once the election is verified.
Trump had already been at odds with his own party, prior to this week, over the rhetoric of a rigged election, drawing fire for what is universally believed to be dangerous ground in a democracy.
