Although Britain voted 52 to 48 percent to leave the European Union, 75 percent of the youngest voters wanted to stay, according to a YouGov survey taken after the polls closed, The Huffington Post reports.

Ben Riley-Smith of the UK Telegraph tweeted the breakdown by age of YouGov's Brexit vote results.

Voters ages 18 to 24 by a wide majority wanted Britain to stay, with 56 percent, fewer but still a majority, of those 25 to 49 wanting to stay.

Brexit, the vote for Britain to leave the European Union, was seen as a clash between those who believed Britain needed to cooperate with other countries and those who believed Britain needed to secure control of its borders.

According to Vox, young voters are devastated by the loss. One commenter said, "Freedom of movement was taken away by our parents, uncles, and grandparents in a parting blow to a generation that was already drowning in the debts of our predecessors."

Intercept journalist Murtaza Hussain tweeted that older voters pushed for the exit.

American actress Lindsay Lohan called for Britain to remain, unleashing a storm of tweets, some of which have now been deleted. NBC News pointed out that Lohan criticized the devaluing of UK currency, saying "Good luck with the pound. Will take you about 15 years to get it back up."
