Rep. Pompeo: Clinton Created Barriers That Stopped Benghazi Calls for Help

By    |   Friday, 23 October 2015 09:10 AM EDT

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton created barriers that allowed hundreds of requests for security for the temporary diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya to be blocked from making it to the senior levels of the State Department, Rep. Mike Pompeo, a member of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, said Friday.

"Well, we certainly haven't seen any documents that show that they made it all the way to her, so her testimony I think is accurate there," the Kansas Republican, who was on the committee that questioned Clinton for more than 11 hours Thursday, told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."

But still, the fact that she didn't get the requests "shows the culture inside of the organization that she created," he continued. "She created a process where there were barriers for important information at a very dangerous facility."

Clinton said during her testimony that it the job of Ambassador Chris Stevens, one of four Americans killed in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the outpost, to make sure the security demands broke through, said Pompeo, but he disagrees with that.

"I think leaders lead and I think it was her job to get security for the people that worked for her," said Pompeo. He also said that Clinton's reliance on long-time confidant Sidney Blumenthal was "odd."

"This was a man with no knowledge of Libya, no expertise in intelligence, and yet it appears that she spent an awful lot of time relying on his information about what was taking place on the ground in Libya, while Ambassador Stevens' material never got to her e-mail," said Pompeo.

He told the program that lawmakers are still working on its evidence and what Clinton's testimony will mean, but pointed out that her comments did demonstrate that the State Department "didn't have systems in place" to care for the Americans stationed in Benghazi.

Further, he said that even though the Benghazi facility was there for diplomatic purposes, it was not an embassy and did not have the security one would have.
