Former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday lauded the late President George H.W. Bush as “perfect” both as a citizen and president, asserting he’d be remembered as “one of the best” commanders-in-chief of the nation.
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Powell praised the 41st president’s qualifications from a lifetime of service to the country.
“I thought he was a perfect American in terms how far he served the country in so many capacities,” Powell said, adding, “You name it. He did it. Became vice president for eight years [for President Ronald Reagan] and then president of the United States. Throughout that period, he never forgot who he was. He never let it all go to his head. He was a man of great humility.”
Powell credited Bush’s upbringing for his true moral compass.
“He was always kind. He was always contained within himself. He didn't let emotions get on top of him,” Powell said. “And frankly, he was a product of his parents. They told him, ‘Don't show off, George. Just always remember, you're humble. You work for people. You serve people.’ So I think he was a perfect president.”
Added Powell; “He will be seen as one of the best ones.”
