Ex-Commish Ray Kelly: NYPD Taking Appropriate Response

(Fox News' "The Daily Briefing")

The New York City Police Department is taking the appropriate response to the number of suspicious packages containing explosives that were attempted to be sent Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama and other liberal figures, former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Wednesday afternoon.

"The NYPD does prepare for this," Kelly told Fox News host Dana Perino. "Some similarities have appeared and they're going to continue to follow that. They'll look at the signature. Bomb makers often times have ticks. If they made multiple bombs, there are certain things you can see that may tip off who the individual is. I know that the ATF has extensive files in this regard."

Both Clinton and Obama are protected by the Secret Service, he added, and it has a "very detailed file of people who may have threatened either one of these individuals in the past."
Another device was sent to Democratic donor George Soros' home, which might provide information through video recordings.

The CNN package contained a pipe bomb and white powder, but Kelly said he assumes it had already been dismissed as a threat, "otherwise they would not have handled the bomb as quickly as they did."

He added it would be hard to say if the packages were sent by one person or people motivated by media or political views, but he doubts a group was involved, even though that cannot be ruled out.

Meanwhile, coordination between local and federal authorities are now better than it has ever been, Kelly said.

"In the past, there's been some concerns about coordination," he said. "I think the communication is excellent now. Everybody understands that we're all in it together. The entity for these investigations generally is a joint terrorism task force. This clearly looks like domestic terrorism. Inside that entity, you know, you have all of the agencies represented."
