Harry Reid called Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump "unorthodox" on Wednesday and advised people to "never, ever, ever underestimate" him.

Reid made the remarks during an interview with Politico.

"Never, ever, ever underestimate Trump. No one should do that. I tried, others have tried. He's a hard guy to predict," the Democrat Reid said.

"One of the most unorthodox candidates for the presidency in modern times. Certainly in modern times, post-modern times. A real unusual deal we have here."

Reid, the Senate Minority Leader, is retiring at the end of this year. He was first sworn into the Senate in 1987 following a four-year stint in the House.

Reid and others on both sides of the aisle have taken issue with Trump's brash style on the campaign trail, and they are worried what the future of the nation holds if Trump wins. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is second to Trump in the polls and primary delegate votes.

"You have one who has been plotting to be president for six or seven months. That's Trump. You have Cruz, who has been plotting to be president since he was in elementary school," Reid said.

There has been talk of an open convention this summer, meaning Trump could enter with the most delegate votes but still lose the nomination. The COO of the Republican National Committee reportedly met with conservative officials this week and discussed the rules of an open, or contested, convention. House Speaker Paul Ryan said over the weekend the chances of having an open convention are growing.
