GOP-Led House Committees to Widen Probe of Hillary Emails

By    |   Wednesday, 11 March 2015 11:03 PM EDT

Two Republican-led House committees plan to widen their investigations of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email account while serving as secretary of state – and "get to the bottom of this," The Wall Street Journal reports.

The plans include asking for additional records and either testimony or documents from members of her inner circle, The Journal reports.

South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy, who heads the House select committee looking into the 2012 deadly attacks in Benghazi, Libya, told The Journal a broader probe is needed in light of her admission she used a private, rather than government server, while at the State Department.

"To the extent that they either have information or could direct us to new information, I’d be a bad investigator if I didn’t investigate," Gowdy said.

He said an independent third party would have to evaluate the server – and the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate could be subpoenaed or asked to testify.

Gowdy told The Journal Congress could seek to censure Clinton if she doesn’t comply.

"I frankly think that the burden of persuasion is on her," he told The Journal, adding: "I don’t have a personal server, I didn’t set up my situation the way she did."

In addition, Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, said Wednesday his panel will formally request information from the State Department and Clinton.

"I’d rather not have to subpoena her, but if she’s fully cooperative there wouldn’t be a need," Chaffetz told The Journal.

"Are we prepared to do so if necessary? I suppose so. We’re going to get to the bottom of this."

Chaffetz said his committee will review all responses to congressional Freedom of Information Act requests from the State Department since 2009 that didn’t include Clinton emails.

"It seems as if every one of those requests is probably incomplete," he said. "We have requests from the House and Senate, from both members and committees. If none of her emails were included, those document productions were obviously incomplete."

Clinton says she used a private email account housed on a server located in her Chappaqua, N.Y., home rather than a government account because it was more convenient than carrying two mobile devices.

Clinton’s office said she had complied with all federal records laws and wasn’t asked for records of her private emails until last October, The Journal reports.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said House leaders "are not ruling out any options at this point" for how to address the issue.

"Those official records must be turned over; the Congress—and the American people—have a legal right to these official records, and her current position is unacceptable," spokesman Michael Steel told The Journal.
