Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that he had hoped for Donald Trump's victory in 2016 US presidential election because of his pledges to improve ties between the two nations.

"Yes I wanted him to win because he talked about normalizing Russian-American relations," Putin said at a joint press conference after a summit with the US leader.

Despite that preference, Putin continued to strongly deny that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
