Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore on Wednesday wrote an open letter to Fox News host Sean Hannity after Hannity on Tuesday night gave him a 24-hour deadline to clear up what Hannity called inconsistencies in his defense of accusations of sexual misconduct.
Moore posted his letter on Facebook and Twitter about three hours before Hannity's Wednesday program was set to air.
Moore said in the 500-word letter he is "suffering the same treatment other Republicans have had to endure," including late-stage attacks by The Washington Post "and other liberal media in a desperate attempt to smear my character and defeat my campaign."
He also noted no such details ever were brought up in his multiple local and statewide campaigns, and he went through the details his lawyer Philip Jauregui and campaign chairman Bill Armistead gave at a Wednesday press conference, challenging the details of one of his accusers, Beverly Young Nelson.
He did not, however, directly respond to what Hannity had referred to as his inconsistent statements about his accusers.
"I adamantly deny the allegations of Leigh Corfman and Beverly Nelson, did not date underage girls, and have taken steps to begin a civil action for defamation," Moore wrote. "Because of that, at the direction of counsel, I cannot comment further."
Hannity read Moore's statement on his show Wednesday.
"We've demanded rightly answers from Judge Moore," Hannity said. "He provided them to the specific questions we asked."
The people of Alabama deserve answers to make an informed decision, and that could involve Gov. Kay Ivey delaying the special election, which currently is set for Dec. 12, Hannity said.
"I lived in Alabama, I enjoyed my time in Alabama," Hannity said. "And I know these people. They are smart, they are great Americans — God, family, faith, country — and I am very confident that when everything comes out, they will make the best decision for their state."
