New York City police are stepping up security — including at the French Consulate, around landmarks and reportedly at several media company offices — in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack on a Paris magazine that killed 12 people.
The Police Department's deputy commissioner for intelligence and counter-terrorism, John Miller, says a detective is stationed in Paris and is closely monitoring the situation.
"There are standing contingency plans in place to adjust police deployments based on any unfolding situation in the world," Miller said,
WABC-TV reports.
"That includes how we use and where we position and deploy specialized police resources."
NBC News New York reports the increased security will include the French Consulate, landmarks and some media offices; National Guardsmen and police were both seen at Grand Central Terminal. The MTA is monitoring the situation, it also reported.
NYPD Commissioner William Bratton called the Paris attack "very concerning," saying the terrorists appear to be trained and well armed.
"These are not amateurs," Bratton said, WABC reports.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Paris said it had no plans to close or limit access to diplomatic facilities in France,
NBC News reports.
"We are open for business as usual," the embassy said.
U.S. defense officials also said there were no plans to increase the level of security for military bases and personnel in Europe, NBC News reports.
