In South Carolina, a usually reliable stronghold for Republicans, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are neck-and-neck, a new poll from the Feldman Group shows.
The poll, paid for by the South Carolina Democratic Party, shows an even race when Green Party's Jill Stein and Libertarian Gary Johnson are included:
- Clinton: 39 percent;
- Trump: 39 percent;
- Undecided: 16 percent.
Without third-party candidates, Trump leads Clinton, but not by much:
- Clinton: 43 percent;
- Trump: 45 percent;
- Undecided: 12 percent.
A Democratic candidate for president hasn't won South Carolina since 1976, when Georgia's Jimmy Carter won the White House, according to the Washington Examiner.
Previous GOP candidate Mitt Romney won the state with 54 percent, before him Sen. John McCain took the state with 53 percent, reports 270 To Win.
FiveThirtyEight gives the Feldman Group a 'B-' rating, while South Carolina Republican Chairman Matt Moore called the poll "bogus," according to The Week.
Public Policy Polling's last South Carolina poll from Aug. 9-10 also shows Trump with a slim 2 point lead over Clinton, while Gravis Marketing's recent poll shows Clinton lagging behind Trump by 4 points.
