If Donald Trump is the Republican nominee, he will pull in union members who usually vote for Democrats, publisher Steve Forbes said in an interview aired Sunday on
"The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York.
Union leaders may endorse a Democrat such as Hillary Clinton, Forbes told host John Catsimatidis, "but the rank and file, a big chunk of them are going to go their own way."
Trump's speeches are big reason for the wide appeal he is drawing, Forbes added.
"Trump, even as he criticizes and throws out charges and all that kind of thing, he always ends up on an upbeat note about the USA," he said. "People want that, people want to hear that. They're tired of all this gloom and doom, and 'the U.S. is going in a trash heap.'"
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio need to match that tone if they hope to have a chance against Trump, he said.
"Well Ted Cruz has got to get a, I think, more upbeat note," he said. "He's got some good ideas on gold, he's got some good ideas on taxes, but he's got to be a little more Reagan-esque in his speeches."
Rubio, Forbes said, "is trying to do that, he's getting better at it. I just wish he'd make his tax plan better. He's got the worst tax plan out there."
