While he says he has no problem with multiculturalism, former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge says it is being used as a buzzword in Europe to keep Muslims from assimilating into the larger community.
And that, Ridge says, helped fuel the radicals who killed 12 people in an attack on a Paris satirical magazine on Wednesday.
"The United States is more like the U.N. sometimes than the U.N. in terms of diversity,"
Ridge said Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto."
"But muliticaulturalism does not mean you segregate people, particularly the Muslim community, in little enclaves and don't work with the religious leaders and economic leaders and the political leaders to assimilate them into the broader national fabric."
"Since that has not been done it forms an enclave that breeds terrorists," Ridge said.
Certain "No-Go Zones" in Paris and throughout France have essentially been ceded to Muslims who rule with Sharia law,
The Washington Times reports. Young Muslims in those areas are French citizens, but feel no connection to French society.
The two gunmen and their driver who attacked Charlie Hedbo offices on Wednesday were a part of that society and are not mere criminals, Ridge said.
"They didn't care whether they were caught or not. They didn't care if they died at the scene of the attack. They are terrorists," he said. "It's an entirely different mindset."
