The United States didn’t bomb runways in Syria because they are “easy and inexpensive to quickly fill,” President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday.
U.S. ships late last week fired more than 50 cruise missiles at the Sharyat Airbase in Syria, a barrage in response to a chemical attack in the Syrian village of Khan Sheikhou which left more than 85 people dead and hundreds more injured. Many blamed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the chemical attack, and Trump vowed to do something about it.
The Pentagon said the U.S. missile strikes targeted hangars, aircraft and the base’s infrastructure, including fuel pumps and anti-air defenses, and about 20 planes were destroyed in the attack. But the runways were untouched, and a U.S. defense official told CNN the purpose of the attack was to send a message to the Syrian regime that “any use of chemical weapons would not be tolerated.”
Trump early Saturday also tweeted a congratulatory message to military members involved in the attack.
