During an appearance this week on CNN’s "Anderson Cooper" show, the brother of Kate Steinle — the San Francisco woman fatally shot by an illegal immigrant who had been deported multiple times — accused Donald Trump of sensationalizing the case.

"If you're going to use somebody's name and you're going to sensationalize the death of a beautiful young lady, maybe you should call and talk to the family first and see what their views are," Brad Steinle said in response to a question by Cooper about whether he thought Trump was "using" the case to bolster his presidential campaign.

Story continues below video.

Steinle said Trump "talks about Kate Steinle like he knows her," yet the family has never heard from the real estate mogul or his campaign. It would be nice, he said, if the family members had been asked for their "view" and "input."

Their goal, according to Steinle, is to "have something put together by like-minded, reasonable people. Something that’s fair and agreeable by both parties."

While campaigning on a platform of stricter immigration laws and decrying the rampant flood of illegal immigrants, Trump has repeatedly cited Kate Steinle’s murder and the danger of sanctuary cities, like San Francisco, that have laws to shelter illegal immigrants.

The day after Brad Steinle’s remarks, Trump reached out to him via Twitter.

Trump was referring to a July 4 Twitter message Steinle sent him.

Several Twitter users came to Trump’s defense.
