A number of Donald Trump's Latino surrogates are questioning their role in his campaign after the billionaire renewed his tough stance on immigration in a recent speech, Politico reports.

Jacob Monty, a member of Trump's National Hispanic Advisory Council, resigned after hearing the speech.

"I was a strong supporter of Donald Trump when I believed he was going to address the immigration problem realistically and compassionately," Monty told Politico. "What I heard today was not realistic and not compassionate."

"When we met [earlier in August] he was going to approach this issue with a realistic plan, a compassionate plan, with a plan that was not disruptive to the immigrants that were here that were not lawbreakers," said Monty, who met Trump with other Latino leaders at Trump Tower on August 20, where BuzzFeed News reports Trump softened his words on immigration. "He didn't deliver any of that."

Alfonso Aguilar, president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles and one-time Trump critic who eventually moved past the real estate mogul's comments on Hispanics, said, According to The Washington Post, he was behind a letter of support from himself and other notable Latino conservatives. He became one of Trump's defenders in the media.

"It's so disappointing because we feel we took a chance, a very risky chance," Aguilar told Politico. "We decided to make a big U-turn to see if we could make him change. We thought we were moving in the right direction … we're disappointed. We feel misled."

"I can tell you there's a real possibility we will withdraw support from Donald Trump because of that disappointing speech," he concluded.
