Ingraham: Trump Speech Was 'Specific After Specific'

Donald Trump's critics have accused him of broad generalities, but he got more specific in his much-anticipated speech on immigration Wednesday night,  coming just hours after his meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

"This speech, it was lengthy, it went into specific after specific," said talk radio host Laura Ingraham, a Trump adviser, on Fox News Channel's "Hannity." "I mean, getting down to the 287(g) program which is cooperation of the states and the federal government, which he's going to reinvigorate."

The "big kicker," she said, was how what Trump described as President Barack Obama's "catch-and-release" policy of allowing those who cross the border to stay in the United States.

"We're immediately going to deport them, including to the countries who refuse to take deported illegal immigrants today," she said. "He went into specific after specific on the impact of the American people on crime, on our security, on jobs."

The speech, before a cheering crowd in Phoenix, Arizona, was a big contrast to Democrat Hillary Clinton's "lackluster speech at the American Legion" earlier Wednesday, where "she received tepid, polite applause," Ingraham said.

Trump also looked presidential meeting with the Mexican president earlier in the day and holding a joint press conference, she said.

Bill Kristol, editor or the conservative Weekly Standard, is a Trump critic, but agreed that Trump went a long way Wednesday toward winning over critics.

"You know, I think that picture of him with the president of Mexico helps him a lot," Kristol told MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell. "I don't know that it gets him even in the race with Hillary Clinton or anything like that. But I think people are kidding themselves if they don't see that today was a good day for Trump."

Juan Williams, a liberal commentator on Fox News Channel, wasn't convinced, though, telling Hannity, "Donald Trump has not shifted in terms of his stand on immigration. This is not outreach; he's giving red meat, again, to the Republican base."
