Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is holding a seven percentage-point lead over GOP nominee Donald Trump in a new survey. It also reveals that supporters of both nominees are more motivated by fear that the other side will win the race, rather than because they are excited about their own candidate.

According to a nationwide USA Today/Suffolk University Poll released on Thursday:

  • 80 percent of Trump supporters feel "scared" if Clinton wins;
  • 62 percent of Clinton supporters fear a Trump win;
  • 27 percent of Clinton supporters are excited by her;
  • 29 percent of Trump supporters are excited by him;
  • 62 percent of Clinton supporters feel "satisfied"
  • 52 percent of Trump supporters are satisfied.

The lead numbers remain virtually unchanged from another Suffolk survey held two months ago. In a four-way match-up: :

  • Clinton: 42 percent;
  • Trump: 35 percent;
  • Libertarian Gary Johnson: 9 percent;
  • Green Party's Jill Stein: 4 percent.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters was taken from Aug. 24 to 29 and carried a margin of error of plus or minus three points.
