Democratic party chief Debbie Wasserman Schultz says the GOP has only itself to blame for the "complete and utter chaos" of its presidential primary after "willingly allowing the tea party extremists to take over their party."
In an interview Sunday with radio host John Catsimatidis on
"The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York, the Florida lawmaker and head of the Democratic National Committee called the GOP primary "unprecedented."
"I¹ve never seen anything like it," she said. "We have a race unfolding on the other side that has been complete and utter chaos."
But, she charged, Republicans "made this bed."
"They¹ve been willingly allowing the tea party extremists to take over their party," she charged. "And so they have only themselves to blame with the likelihood of having a presumptive nominee like Donald Trump, who is the most extreme and vile, misogynistic candidate in modern times."
She said she expects similar "chaos" at the GOP nominating convention, and that "when we have a very clear and focused message that talks about how we want to help people reach the middle class, the contrast couldn¹t be more clear and I think it will result in our nominee being elected president."
"I'm so proud of the campaigns [Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders] have run," she said.
