Voters under 30 years old overwhelmingly support Hillary Clinton for president, with 49 percent saying they will vote for the Democratic candidate and 21 percent backing Republican Donald Trump, according to a Harvard Institute of Politics poll released on Wednesday.
In the survey, 14 percent chose Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, 5 percent backed Jill Stein and 11 percent were undecided.
In a two-way match-up between the top contenders, Clinton defeated Trump 59 percent to 25 percent.
The poll also showed that young voters have grave concerns about the country, with 51 percent saying they feel fearful of the future, while only 20 percent are hopeful.
Other results of the survey include:
- Will "definitely be voting" in the election: 49 percent;
- Among young Hispanics likely to vote: 39 percent;
- Republicans who say they will vote: 56 percent.
When asked about race relations under a Trump administration:
- They would worsen: 62 percent;
- They would improve: 8 percent.
Under a Clinton administration:
- They would improve: 23 percent;
- They would worsen: 22 percent.
Those likely to change their mind before Election Day:
- Johnson supporters: 37 percent;
- Clinton supporters: 6 percent;
- Trump supporters: 5 percent.
The poll of Americans ages 18 to 29 was conducted online from Oct.7-17. Results for interviews among 2,150 adults have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
