Besides adding a refreshing zing to your mint julep or mojito, mint brings a myriad of health benefits. The popular herb, used in several foods and beverages, masks bad breath, eases digestive conditions, improves brain function and more.

Mint is the name for over a dozen plant species, including peppermint and spearmint that belong to the genus Mentha. It’s often used to flavor drinks, desserts and other recipes and comes in supplement form as well. Here are some of its benefits:

• Helps digestion. According to Health, mint contains compounds that make it effective for treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and indigestion. One of these compounds is called L-menthol which helps reduce spasms that cause symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea in people suffering from IBS. Mint also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that may be helpful in reducing inflammation and cellular damage in the digestive tract.

• Boosts cognitive performance. One study found that people treated with a single dose of peppermint oil improved cognitive test performance and reduced mental fatigue compared to a placebo treatment. This may be due to the compounds found in mint that interact with neurotransmitters in the brain.

• Soothes nausea. People undergoing cancer treatment often turn to mint aromatherapy to soothe their nausea and vomiting. The soothing scent has been shown to reduce these symptoms and help patients regain their appetite.

• Masks bad breath. People often reach for mint-flavored gum and breath mints to treat bad breath, says Healthline. Experts say these products help cover up bad breath but don’t get rid of the bacteria and other compounds that cause bad breath in the first place. However, drinking peppermint tea or chewing on fresh mint leaves may not only cover up bad breath but also kills the underlying bacteria.

While mint is usually safe for most people, its best to consult with your healthcare professional before taking supplements. Mint supplements could interact with blood pressure medications and other drugs. High doses of peppermint oil can cause kidney and liver damage, even leading to acute kidney failure.

To reap the benefits of fresh mint, use it frequently in your recipes including salads, grains, pesto, pasta and chopped as a garnish for chicken, meat and fish. Add fresh mint to water, tea or cocktails for extra flavor and health benefits.
