Question: What are the nutritional benefits of nuts and seeds?

Dr. Brownstein’s Answer:

Nuts and seeds are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and phytosterols. Furthermore, nuts are a good sources of healthy fats that help to build healthy immune and nervous systems. Although high in calories, the nutrients in nuts provide the body with a wonderful source of protein and a quick source of energy.

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of adults in the United States. Nuts have been shown in numerous studies to prevent heart disease. Hypertension has also shown improvement with the use of nuts in the diet. Nuts have also been used to improve diabetes and fatigue.

Due to the higher fat content of nuts, one criticism is that they may adversely affect cholesterol and lipid levels. However, nut consumption has been shown to lower elevated cholesterol levels and improve fatty acid profiles.

Nuts and seeds are some of the healthiest foods on the planet, providing a wealth of nutrients for the body. Add nuts to your diet as a healthy snack alternative for both children and adults.
