Hormones and Irritable Bowel

Erika Schwartz, M.D By Thursday, 26 May 2016 03:49 PM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

Women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS.

That’s because as women get older, their hormone production diminishes as they enter menopause. The resulting hormone imbalance directly affects intestinal function and food absorption.

Probiotics and bioidentical hormones will improve the situation.

Unfortunately, your conventionally trained MD will never talk to you about how hormone supplementation, as well as optimizing your thyroid and adrenal function, lead to less bloating, weight gain, and abdominal discomfort.

I see hundreds of women with constant constipation who have been put on an appalling regimen of laxatives, antidepressants, and other horrific medications. They improve dramatically the moment I place them on estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, and adrenal support and show them how to tailor their diets to help them feel better.

Low thyroid causes terrible constipation, and most women wind up taking laxatives, which injure the intestinal tract and decrease their immune system activity, leaving patients vulnerable to many other problems.

Hormone balance, sleep, supplements, and exercise, along with emotional support to address the issues of aging kindly and caringly, can dramatically change for the better the IBS paradigm.
