The results are in and the most unfit cities in the U.S. have been named. So, which residents are the least enthusiastic about getting fit?
People living in Oklahoma City and North Las Vegas are the unlucky winners of this contest, 24/7 Wall St. reported.
The findings are based upon the recently released 2019 American Fitness Index, which ranks the 100 major cities in the U.S. according to health, fitness, and related safety. To arrive at these findings, the survey scored cities according to community fitness as well as resources available to support healthy lifestyles and promote fitness.
Arlington, Virginia; Seattle; and Minneapolis all scored high in these categories, but on the opposite end of the scale, cities that fell at the bottom of the list were the most concerning to experts. Oklahoma City leads the top five most unfit major U.S. city, followed by: North Las Vegas, Nevada; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Toledo, Ohio; and Indianapolis.
The ratings also include personal health.
Inactivity continues to be a widespread issue across the U.S. A separate survey found 28% of the population, or 82.4 million Americans, fall short in terms of the recommended activity levels required for good health. Not only does this negatively impact the physical and emotional wellbeing of community members, but of the city they live in.
"With direct and indirect costs of physical inactivity exceeding $27 billion yearly and 47% of those costs covered by the public sector, increasing physical activity has never been more important to the nation's health and economic outcomes," the 2019 American Fitness Index report noted.
"Good health starts in our homes, schools, and communities. That's why the Fitness Index looks at both personal health behaviors, meaning what we're doing individually to get and stay healthy, as well as the built environment, like parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers that help us do so."
