A few years ago, plastic surgery was a topic whispered among close friends. Nobody would openly admit to having "gone under the knife" but things have changed.
Not only are people talking openly about it, but recent stats show that more and more people are electing to undergo plastic and cosmetic procedures and the majority of them are women.
The latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that the number of cosmetic procedures increased 250,000 in 2018 from the prior year and a total of 17.7 million procedures were performed. For women 1.8 million cosmetic surgical produces were done and 15.9 cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures were performed.
So what surgeries are people having done? The trend is toward body shaping procedures, according to the ASPS.
Here are the top five plastic surgery procedures undergone by women:
5. Tummy tuck. While the number of these procedures remained about the same in 2018 as 2017, it was still a large amount, with more than 130,000 being performed.
4. Eyelid surgery. This type of surgery actually decline slightly year over year, but 206,529 procedure were done.
3. Nose reshaping. This procedure also decline from the year before, with 213,780 being done.
2. Liposuction. This is the procedure that gained the most in popularity among the top five for women, increasing five percent from the year before. The total number performed was 258,558.
1. Breast augmentation. Up four percent from 2017, the procedure commonly known as a “boob job” was done 313,735 times.
