Country singing legend Randy Travis is singing in public again, more evidence of his remarkable recovery after a stroke three years ago nearly killed him.
He sang “Amazing Grace,” in his first public appearance last week at a large funeral of a Texas business owner, the
Bullard Banner reports. The story was accompanied by a photo of Travis standing at the microphone, and noted that he performed as part of a group that included others gathered there.
Travis, who suffered a major stroke in 2013, ended up in a coma and in critical condition, the result of cascading medical problems that included viral cardiomyopathy, a serious heart infection. He also suffered a stroke, for which he underwent brain surgery, as well as the implementation of a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, to aid his weakened heart.
Although doctors said there was little hope of recovery, Travis survived. Although he did not speak or sing, he received a standing ovation last year when he appeared at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Dallas.
