Pediatricians warn a rare but life-threatening syndrome linked to COVID-19 has been reported among young children. It is called multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or MIS-C, and at least three children in New York died from the illness.

According to NBC News, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases admitted we do not know a lot about how COVID-19 affects children.

"We really have to be very careful, because the more and more we learn, we're seeing what this virus can do," he said.

According to the Houston Chronicle, symptoms of MIS-C might include fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, bloodshot eyes, fatigue, and neck pain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued emergency warning signs including trouble breathing, severe stomach, and bluish lips.

Dr. Keith Jensen, regional medical director of pediatric emergency medicine at HCA Houston Healthcare told the Chronicle:

"They're trying to catch it early. It usually responds pretty well to our treatments. That's why we try to catch it sooner rather than later."

Jensen added MIS-C is diagnosed through bloodwork and treated with anti-inflammatory drugs to suppress the inflammation that causes symptoms. At first, doctors thought the kids had Kawasaki Disease which also causes rash and fever. But when they linked the new disease with COVID-19, they realized they were dealing with a different illness altogether.

While the condition is rare, Jensen asked parents to keep a close eye on fevers.

"If your child has a fever, get them to see a doctor," he told the Chronicle. "We need parents to know this is out there and that they should feel safe going to the emergency room."
