Cervical dysplasia is a condition in which there is additional tissue growth in the cervix that is present between the uterus and vagina. Cervical dysplasia is most commonly caused due to infection by the human papilloma virus. Infection leading to cervical dysplasia is most commonly caused by sexual contact and occurs more commonly in women younger than 30.
Cervical dysplasia is a precursor for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer has been reported in many women with cervical dysplasia who did not undergo treatment and take medicines for cure it.
Cervical cancer incidence can be reduced through early diagnosis and treatment of cervical dysplasia. However, the symptoms of cervical dysplasia often go unnoticed and so diagnosis does not happen in the early stages for many. This increases the risk of acquiring cervical cancer. Treatment options and cure for cervical dysplasia depend on various factors such as the age of the person, severity of condition, and so on. - Cryosurgery: This treatment method is effective in cervical dysplasia cure since the cancerous cells are destroyed by the application of extreme cold.
- Electrocauterization: In this treatment procedure, an electrified probe is applied on the precancerous growth in cervical dysplasia to destroy the cells through application of heat.
- Laser surgery: This is also a popular treatment method used to destroy unwanted tissue growth in the cervix that leads to cervical dysplasia and cancer.
In addition to these methods, traditional surgery is also performed to remove the unnecessary tissue from the cervix and cure dysplasia.
Precautions While Taking Treatments for Cervical Dysplasia and Cancer
All of the surgical treatments performed to remove unnecessary tissue in the cervix have side effects such as severe bleeding and possible impact on pregnancy and the ability of women to conceive. Hence, it is important that women with cervical dysplasia discuss possible outcomes with their doctors before taking up treatments.
Pap tests also need to be performed regularly (at least once in three months) for repeat testing after undergoing treatment for cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer.
