Winn-Dixie Recalls Organic Apple Juice

Winn-Dixie is recalling its store-brand organic apple juice because it may contain a byproduct of mold.

Store officials said the voluntary recall — involving 64-ounce containers of Winn-Dixie Organic 100% Apple Juice — is being taken as a precaution because the product may have levels of “patulin” that exceed U.S. Food and Drug Administration limits.

Winn-Dixie has not received any reports of illnesses or issues associated with the juice. Patulin is a mycotoxin, a byproduct of some molds that can grow in fruits and vegetables. It doesn’t usually cause health problems, but FDA regulations stipulate that products containing patulin levels abover 50 parts per billion are subject to a voluntary recall.

The recalled products were sold at Winn-Dixie stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana and carry the UPC code 2114021626 and expiration dates of between January 15, 2014, and March 25, 2014.

"We encourage customers in possession of any of the recalled item to immediately discard the product or bring it back to their store,” said Brian Wright, senior director of Winn-Dixie Corporate Communications. “Customers who have purchased the product may visit their neighborhood Winn-Dixie to request a full refund, no questions asked.”
