USA Today/Gallup Poll: Americans Want to Keep Their Tax Breaks

By    |   Monday, 18 April 2011 02:16 PM EDT

Some members of Congress and outside experts have called for an end to some lucrative tax breaks as part of the effort to curb the exploding budget deficit without raising income tax rates. But a majority of Americans don’t want to lose their tax benefits, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll, The Hill reports.

The survey shows that 61 percent of respondents oppose eliminating the mortgage interest deduction, 62 percent reject the idea of dropping the state and local taxes deduction, and 71 percent want to keep their right to deduct contributions to charities.

Both Democrats and Republicans have called for eliminating some deductions. The 2012 budget adopted by the House Friday basically requires that several of the deductions be dropped.
