Noted conservative Brent Bozell has taken to his Facebook page to slam the National Review for an editorial that praises Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman and slams Newt Gingrich.
“National Review’s endorsement of Romney & Huntsman proves only that this is no longer the magazine of William F. Buckley Jr.,” he posted on his page above a photo of Buckley and President Ronald Reagan sharing a laugh. “My uncle would be appalled.” The late publisher and conservative writer William F. Buckley was Bozell's uncle.
In an editorial posted online Wednesday, the Review said the White House was winnable but “we fear that to nominate former Speaker Newt Gingrich, the frontrunner in the polls, would be to blow this opportunity.”
The Review praised Gingrich for his role in bringing Republicans to power in the House but added that his “colleagues were, however, right to bring his tenure to an end. His character flaws — his impulsiveness, his grandiosity, his weakness for half-baked (and not especially conservative) ideas — made him a poor Speaker of the House.”
The editorial went on to praise Romney, who the Review endorsed four years ago. Romney would still "make a fine president,” the Review editorial said.
“We will render further judgments in the weeks to come as the candidates continue to make their cases and are, just perhaps, joined by new candidates,” the editorial concluded. “At the moment we think it important to urge Republicans to have the good sense to reject a hasty marriage to Gingrich, which would risk dissolving in acrimony.”
