Rubio: Arizona Law Raises Profiling Concerns

Wednesday, 28 April 2010 08:15 AM EDT

Republican Marco Rubio criticized a new Arizona law that attempts to crack down on illegal immigration, according to a report by the Palm Beach Post.

Rubio, who now enjoys a significant GOP primary lead over Gov. Charlie Crist, sounds as if he is ramping up for a general election campaign against Democratic frontrunner Kendrick Meek and, perhaps, an independent candidacy by Crist.

Rubio said Arizona's measure was spawned by the failure by the federal government.

"We have a runaway illegal immigration problem that the federal government has failed to handle. And the result is states like Arizona have had to take action," Rubio said.

But, Rubio added, "I think that the law has potential unintended consequences and it's one of the reasons why I think immigration needs to be a federal issue, not a state one."
