Immigration to Set Deportation Quotas

Saturday, 27 March 2010 02:22 PM EDT

Dissatisfied with the rate of deportations this year, U.S. immigration officials have establised new quotas for its field agents.

According to The Washington Post, a memo from the head of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's detention and removal operations stated that the agency is on track to deport about 310,000 illegals by Sept. 30 -- far below ICE's 2010 goal of 400,000. Last year, ICE deported 387,000 illegal immigrants, the memo stated.

The Feb. 22 memo, from James M. Chaparro, also revealed how ICE would attempt to improve its numbers:
  • Adding more detention space for apprehended illegal immigrants.
  • Conducting more intensive prison searches for illegals.
  • Offering quick deportation to apprehended illegals.
  • Mounting a surge to target illegal immigrants who have lied on immigration or visa applications or returned to the America after being previously deported.
When contacted by the Post, an ICE spokesman said "Portions of the memo were inconsistent with ICE, inconsistent with the administration's point of view and inconsistent with the secretary [of homeland security]."

Chaparro issued a new memo on Friday, but the Post said it "did not alter or rescind any of the strategies he had laid out."
