Zogby: Obama Plunges to 39% as Dems Abandon Him, Too

Tuesday, 23 November 2010 10:01 AM EST

The fact that even Democrats are turning on President Barack Obama contributed to an approval plunge to 39 percent, his lowest ever, according to a Zogby Poll that prompted John Zogby to describe the result as a “perilous position.” Two months ago, Zogby put the president’s approval at 49 percent, according to the Top of the Ticket political blog in the Los Angeles Times.

Obama, Zogby, approval, 39 percentWhereas 51 percent disapproved of the president's performance on Sept. 20, 60 percent now flunk him, according to Top of the Ticket. The approval of independents, who helped propel the president’s coalition election, has fallen to 39 percent.

And ToT scribe Andrew Malcolm cites John Zogby’s ominous observation that President Obama now is “losing support among his own party people. His approval plopped nearly 10 percent in just one week, from 78 percent down to 72 percent in Zogby's latest read.”

The blog quotes Zogby as noting that Obama "is failing to please more than one-fourth of his own party’s voters. This is a perilous position for the president.”

"Conventional wisdom calls for him to reach for the center and assume that Democrats will stay with him in 2012. But as we saw in the midterms, Democrats can't win without strong turnout from the young and minorities, both of which are demographics that need more motivation than others to vote."

After observing that Obama trails in hypothetical 2012 matchups against Republicans Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Jeb Bush, Malcolm reveals with a tinge of excitement: “And, oh, my! Lookee here! Obama has even fallen into a statistical tie with none other than Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor. How embarrassing that is because other polls have shown a majority of Americans believe she is unqualified for the presidency. So it appears many have now decided, on second thought, Obama looks that way, too.”
