House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she believes Democratic primary and caucus voters will select a presidential nominee before the party’s convention in August — with no need for superdelegates to decide the race.
“The electoral process has to work its way,” the California congresswoman told reporters Wednesday morning.
“There are still many voters unheard from yet, and I think that our candidates both have the capacity to inspire, to bring out a big vote that will hold us in good stead in November, and I think that now is not the time for anybody to weigh in."
Superdelegates are mostly elected officials and party officers and are free to support anyone they choose at the convention, regardless of the results of their state’s primaries.
These delegates, Pelosi said, should weigh a number of factor before deciding how to cast their vote, including whether Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama won whatever district they represent, as well as “their own belief,” The Hill newspaper reported.
Pelosi, who will be chairwoman of the Democratic convention, has remained neutral in the race.
