Republicans Vitter, Olson Aim to Lift Drilling Moratorium

Tuesday, 15 June 2010 03:17 PM EDT

A pair of Gulf state Republicans introduced proposals to lift President Obama's ban on offshore drilling starts.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., and Rep. Pete Olson, R-Texas, filed legislation to lift the six-month moratorium the president imposed after the fatal BP oil rig explosion and subsequent environmental disaster of gushing oil, according to a blog on The Hill.

The proposal arises from concern that the ban will only worsen the economic blows evolving from the flow.

"This moratorium threatens to finish what the oil spill started," the blog quoted Vitter as saying. "If it stays in place, even for six months, it will be a devastating blow to the economy of Louisiana and other Gulf states."
