Political guru Dr. Larry Sabato says he is not surprised with Herman Cain's decision to suspend his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination .
"He could have continued and finished with less than 5 percent of the Iowa vote and even less in New Hampshire. And those figures explain why any sane person would have suspended," Sabato remarked.
Cain made the announcement in Atlanta in front of a new Georgia headquarters his campaign was dedicating today.
His wife Gloria stood off to his side as he went through the reasons for his decision. Twice during Cain's speech the crowd chanted her name.
Cain emphatically told the crowd that he is at peace with his God and his wife, adding that she is also at peace with him.
As he has said in the past, Cain told his supporters all the allegations against him are not true, throwing in that the media spin on the allegations have hurt his wife, his family and himself.
He has been fending off allegations of sexual harrasment by a group of women and a recent allegation by another woman of having conducted an extramarital affair for 13 years.
Cain told the crowd suspending his campaign does not mean he will be silenced.
He told them in the coming days he will make a decision concerning an endorsement of one of the remaining GOP contenders.
There was word today that Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's presidential campaign had a dialogue with the Cain camp prior to his announcement but the Bachmann team would not categorize the dialogue in any way.
Sabato says both Bachmann and former House Speaker New Gingrich, "reportedly think they will get the endorsement.
"Cain actually endorsed Romney in 2008. But that was a different time and most of Cain's backers are very anti-Romney," adds Sabato.
"The endorsement will mean less than many think. Activists are very engaged and make up their own minds about the presidential race," furthers the University of Virginia Center for Politics director.
"Cain's backers are not going to follow him like a herd of cattle into the camp of his endorsee, especially after the events of the last month or so," Sabato emphasizes.
