Tom Kean: Chris Christie Is Thinking of 2012

By    |   Monday, 26 September 2011 10:15 PM EDT

Former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean says his longtime friend Gov. Chris Christie is "very seriously" considering a run for the White House, reports the National Review online.

“It’s real,” Kean told the magazine. “He’s giving it a lot of thought. I think the odds are a lot better now than they were a couple weeks ago.”

More reports surfaced this weekend that Christie is again considering a  White House run despite earlier denials. Kean says Christie is undecided,  but is in talks with party leaders.  With the field up for grabs, Christie is reviewing his options.

“More and more people are talking to him,” Kean says. “He’s getting appeals from major figures around the country.”

And Kean says he has urged Christie, whom he has known since he was a teenager and occasionally advises, to jump into the race.

“He is the best speaker I may have ever heard in politics," he told the Review.

“In an era when most people suspect that politicians read polls and then tell you what they think, people don’t believe he’s that kind of a fellow,” Kean says. “He tells you what he thinks, period. We like that around here.”

“A lot of people are not satisfied with the field,” the former governor said. “I know he’s getting advice from all sides.”

Christie has repeatedly said that he did not want to run for the White House, most often citing his family and his desire to stay in New Jersey. He has said he was flattered that many were asking.

Christie has used Kean as an adviser since taking office, including having him chair a commission that studied the future of higher education in New Jersey.
