By    |   Tuesday, 28 September 2010 12:34 PM EDT

Unions are supposed to be a dying force, but they’re doing all they can to keep Democrats in Congress. The AFL-CIO will spend $53 million on 400 of November’s races, while the Service Employees International Union will dole out $44 million, up 26 percent from the Unions, Democrats, spending, AFL-CIO, SEIU, AFSCMElast mid-term elections in 2006, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees will spend $50 million, CNBC reports.

“If the GOP takes control of the House in November, we predict things will be very, very bad for working people, especially given the Republican track record over the past two years," United Auto Workers President Bob King told CNBC.

The good news for Republicans is that only about 12 percent of American workers are part of a union, down from 35 percent in 1953.
