What does the president of the United States do when the country is teetering on the brink of financial ruin? Well, in Barack Obama's case, he heads to the New York home of movie executive Harvey Weinstein for a fundraiser.
Weinstein co-hosted a trendy affair at his West Village digs, along with Vogue's editor in chief, Anna Wintour.
Celebrities in attendance at the fundraiser included Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband Chris Martin, Jimmy Fallon, Vera Wang, Alicia Keys, and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. All purportedly paid a ticket price of $35,800 of which $5,000 was doled out to the Obama re-election campaign, and $30,800 was hustled over to the Democratic National Committee.
Obama did a little sobbing to the crowd. He shared with them the highlights of his trip to Michigan and told the supporters, "What I said to them is you deserve better than you have been getting out of Washington over the last 2 1/2 months, for that matter for the last 2 1/2 years."
If he had been talking about what has been passing for leadership out of the Oval office, there would have been a whole lot of heartland "ayes" affirming his statement.
While addressing the bedazzled crowd, Obama admitted that he had done a slip and slide on the coolness scale.
"They have still got the Obama poster; it is all frayed," the president said. "Obama is gray haired, he doesn't seem as cool. In some ways that is a healthy thing. Because in 2012 . . . we realize it is about us . . . It is not about my election. One person."
There's only one way to interpret that statement, and that's by using the Obama rule of opposites.
Once again, it's all about him.
