At a time when many Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill are calling for the resignation of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told Newsmax on Wednesday he is "not sure what to recommend" about the retired four-star general's continued tenure.

Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, spoke at a Washington, D.C., press breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

"It was clearly a serious mistake the way [the White House] handled [Rob] Porter," he said, referring to the former White House staff secretary who abruptly quit last week after it was revealed two of his former wives told the FBI that Porter had been abusive to them.

"We need to know more," said the Californian, emphasizing it was important to know precisely when Kelly learned of Porter's serious problems from the FBI background investigation.

Schiff also said he was "concerned" about what he called Kelly's "incendiary suggestions" about dealing with illegal immigrants while secretary of Homeland Security and his "comments during the Russia investigation [into the Kremlin's alleged interference in U.S. elections in 2016]."

As to whether all this is convincing evidence Kelly should go, Schiff simply said: "I don't know. I'm not sure what to recommend."
