No sooner had Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., announced he was voting to remove Donald Trump as president Wednesday than Alabama conservatives concluded he had signed his political death warrant.
Before the impeachment vote, a poll of likely voters statewide conducted by JMC Analytics and Polling in December showed him losing to the three leading Republican hopefuls vying to take on the senator this fall.
Jones, the Yellowhammer State's only Democratic senator since 1996, won a narrow special election in 2017 over controversial, twice-removed former state Chief Justice Roy Moore.
Moore's Republican campaign imploded following widespread charges of misbehavior toward teenage girls as a young man.
According to JMC Analytics, onetime Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville clobbers Jones among likely voters by 47%-40%.
The same poll showed Jones losing to former Sen. Jeff Sessions, whose resignation to become attorney general resulted in the special election three years ago. Sessions defeats Jones 46%-41%, according to JMC polling.
JMC also tested Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Ala., and found, if he were the GOP candidate, he would defeat Jones 44%-40%.
The same survey found Alabama voters did not want Trump impeached (54%-39%) and a full 48% of the same voters do not think Jones deserves re-election.
"Doug was on life support," former State Rep. Perry Hooper, Trump's campaign chairman in Alabama, told Newsmax. "But his vote to convict the President put the last nail in the coffin! He is dead meat!"
