White House National Security Adviser John Bolton made a very thinly-disguised hint to Newsmax Monday that the United States was discussing possible action against the reported presence of 25,000 Cuban troops and secret police in Venezuela.

Bolton made this remark during a briefing at the White House in which he joined Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin to lay out the Administration’s latest round of sanctions against Venezuela’s embattled Marxist President Nicolas Maduro.

In response to Newsmax’s question about the presence of Cuban troops in Venezuela violating the charter of the Organization of American States (OAS) and whether the United States would take any action, Bolton replied: “As you know, Secretary of State [Mike] Pompeo addressed the OAS assembly a few days ago.”

(In his address, Pompeo charged that “there is no regime which has aided and abetted Maduro’s tyranny like the one in Havana.” He went on to call on the OAS “to act on basic, decent, democratic principles and the incontrovertible facts on the ground.”)

“We expect more meetings on this in the coming days,” said Bolton, noting that “as both Secretary Mnuchin and I said, we know what the legitimate government of Venezuela is and to make a full reality in Venezuela what the people of Venezuela want.”
