In New Hampshire — a state that went narrowly for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and which has two women Democrats as U.S. Senator — Republican Gov. Chris Sununu holds a commanding lead in his bid for a second two-year term.
According the latest Emerson College Poll released on Monday, Sununu, son of a former governor and brother of a former U.S. Senator, leads liberal Democrat and former State Sen. Molly Kelly by 51 to 35 percent statewide. Fourteen percent of the Granite State electorate are undecided. The margin of error is +/-3.7 percentage points.
“Historically, governors of New Hampshire are rewarded with one re-election to a two-year term,” former Rep. Charles Bass, R.-N.H., told Newsmax, recalling how the only one-term governor in the last half century was Republican Craig Benson (2002-04).
Bass also noted that many Republicans who are not pleased with President Trump can satisfy their consciences by voting for Sununu and then crossing over to support Democrats for other offices.
Former State Attorney General Thomas D. Rath, a major player in the quadrennial New Hampshire presidential primary and a Republican, told us that “Chris Sununu is well known and New Hampshire has enjoyed great economic growth in his term. There’s a big budget surplus, very high employment levels and robust development. And folks know Sununu and like him. The Democrats have not been able to dent him.”
